As for background information about the artist,
Jakob Engberg (38) - founder of Copenhagen Signs, has a background as a graphic designer and been working with printing, photography and graffiti among other fields of creative work, before finishing his apprenticeship as a sign maker in 2015, graduating with a medal. After a period of working with contemporary sign techniques as wells as screen printing, gold leaf and hand painted signs for highly renowned sign companies in Denmark, he later chose to put all his focus into traditional hand painted signs.
He is now one of the few full time sign painters in Denmark. Working with custom lettering, gold leaf and traditional sign writing, as well as mural art and typographic design.
Exploring letterforms with his unique approach and meanwhile honouring the old techniques, Jakob has become well established on the international scene of lettering artists and sign painters. In 2018/19 his lettering artworks were part of group exhibitions in Copenhagen, Tokyo, London and Chicago.
With a substantial knowledge in digital design and modern sign making techniques, he acknowledges the advantages and quality of hand painted signs and is working towards maintaining the craft of sign painting. Attending Letterhead Meets, networking internationally and sharing his knowledge through social media platforms, is a part of his ambition of keeping the art of the hand painted sign alive.
Besides his daily work as a traditional sign painter, he is teaching lettering workshops all around the world and frequently giving talks about his work at Typography and Graphic Design Festivals such as Torino Graphic Days (IT), Typetersburg (RU), We Love Graphic Design (DK) and TypoFest (BG). Jakob was a member of the jury at TypeParis18 (FR).
His lettering art is featured in several publications, among some the "Hand Style Lettering" book published by Victionary. Jakob is the author to the book “Danske Skilte” (Danish Signs) published 2018 by BookLab.dk
